East Gippsland Rail Trail
Bairnsdale to Newmerella
Experience the diversity of East Gippsland as this trail weaves past undulating farmland, tall forests, creeks, rivers and flood plains; crosses historic timber railway bridges and enjoys views of the Gippsland Lakes before arriving at Orbost and the Snowy River. To include a trip to the lakes on your journey, the Gippsland Lakes Discovery Trail connects to Lakes Entrance from Seaton Track in the Colquhoun Forest.
Distance: 94 km one way
Track: Generally smooth dirt or gravel track
Grade: Level 1 – No experience required, suitable for beginners and children.
Level 2 – Suitable for most ages and fitness levels, some riding experience recommended.
Start: Howitt Park, McEacharn Street, Bairnsdale
Finish: Burn Road, Newmerella
Note: The trail ends at Newmerella, but there is an off road shared pathway that begins at Burn Road and is 2 km to Orbost. Take care at high speed highway crossings. If taking the Gippsland Lakes Discovery Trail to Lakes Entrance, note that it is only suitable for mountain bikes.
Getting there: Travel via Monash Freeway (M1) and Princes Highway (A1) to Bairnsdale approximately 280 km east of Melbourne.
