Aboriginal Victoria
Head towards the spectacular Great Ocean Road where amazing views and experiences await around every corner. From Wathaurong country in Geelong, to the Gunditjmara people of the west, walk and talk with a local guide, discover native wildlife or have the opportunity to sample bush foods of the area.
Visit Tower Hill, a site of significance for the Gunditjmara people, nestled inside an extinct volcano near Warrnambool. Continue along the Great Ocean Road to Lake Condah, Heywood. This site was recently granted National Heritage listing due to evidence of a permanent Aboriginal village – exploding the myth that all Indigenous people of Australia were nomadic. Located in a shallow basin, here you’ll see the remains of a complex eel trap system some hectares in size.
A visit to Victoria’s Great Ocean Road region is an essential part of your journey through Aboriginal Victoria.
Meet koalas, emus, kangaroos and many species of waterbirds roaming freely in Tower Hill State Game Reserve, which sits inside an extinct volcano.
