Point Lonsdale

View the dramatic scenery from high points along the ocean foreshore of Point Lonsdale, overlooking The Rip – the notorious entrance to Port Phillip Bay where ocean and bay waters collide through an outlet only a kilometre wide, creating one of the world’s most dangerous stretches of water. Swim at a beautiful sheltered bay beach with a pleasant foreshore reserve with picnic and barbecue facilities. Enjoy a coffee while watching the beach action at one the cafes along the esplanade.

Local history
Learn about local marine history with a tour of the famous Point Lonsdale lighthouse, used to guide big ships through the treacherous waters of The Rip. Visit the cave of 'Wild White Man' William Buckley, an escaped convict who lived 32 years with the local Aboriginal population and reputedly sheltered in a cave under the lighthouse.
