Australian football (AFL): Aussie Rules
Get caught up in the footy fervour at an AFL match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), or head to suburban grounds to see rising stars and retired champs competing. Most winter weekends also see AFL games at Etihad Stadium at Docklands.
Cricket
Cricket takes over the MCG for the Boxing Day test match against a fellow cricketing nation, and it remains throughout the summer of one-day matches, Twenty 20 carnivals and the Bushrangers in the domestic competition. The Melbourne Renegades and Stars get the crowds baying for big shots in the Big Bash League.
Netball, basketball and baseball
You could witness the Melbourne Vixens trans-Tasman netball clashes and Aussie Diamonds international netball at Hisense Arena. Melbourne Tigers have a long history of success in the National Basketball League.
Tennis
During January you'll be treated to the world's best tennis players and the festive atmosphere of the Australian Open grand slam at Melbourne Park.
Rugby and soccer
Both rugby codes plus the city's two soccer teams ensure there's always something to see at the impressive AAMI Park rectangular stadium. The Melbourne Storm fly the flag for rugby league, the Melbourne Rebels represent for rugby union and Melbourne Victory. Melbourne Heart vie for local supremacy in the A-League soccer competition.
Horse and greyhound racing
Spring brings out the inner horse-racing aficionado in Melburnians and visitors from afar, with the Spring Racing Carnival, culminating the Melbourne Cup. Summer brings Christmas and New Year's races at Flemington, plus regular night racing at Moonee Valley and the greyhounds at Sandown.
Motor racing and cycling
Fans of racing with more grunt can catch road racing, drag racing and speedway at Calder Park, Avalon Raceway and Sandown International Motor Raceway. See fast-paced cycling events at the velodrome.
Roller derby, hockey, hurling
Roller derby enthusiasts gather at the Melbourne Showgrounds, also home to the Melbourne Aces baseball team. Melbourne Ice dominate domestic ice hockey from the Icehouse at Docklands, and even competitive hurling can be found around the city.
